Overview
The 2024 Duwamish Valley Critical Needs Research project seeks to understand the critical needs, abilities, and preferences of community members during power outages in South Seattle, WA. Participation from community members is needed to identify key locations where investments can be made to reduce the impacts of future power outages. One of its aims is to develop a first-of-its-kind equitable resilience investment plan.
This research will take place in the Georgetown, South Park, Highland Park, South Beacon Hill, Rainier Beach, and Dunlap neighborhoods of Seattle, WA.
Survey
📢 Calling all residents in South Seattle! Your opinion matters! The survey is now open from April 30th to October 31st, 2024. Please click the link below or scan the QR code to participate.
What will you be asked to do?
We are asking residents of these neighborhoods to participate in a survey. It takes about 20-25 minutes to complete the survey. We offer a $20 gift card for completed surveys. The questions in the survey ask about:

- DemographicÂ
- Household characteristics
- Community goals and energy affordability
- Important community locations
- Preparedness and experience with disruptions
- Power outageÂ
- Closing questions
Eligibility Requirements

- Adults (18 years or older)
- One survey per household
- People living in the Georgetown, South Park, Highland Park, South Beacon Hill, Rainier Beach, or Dunlap neighborhoods in South Seattle, WA.
- People willing to share a mailing address. The survey will ask you to choose important places in your neighborhood. Also, we can send a $20 gift card for completing the survey to the mailing address.
Compensation
One $20 Safeway gift card per household will be sent by mail within one week following completion of the survey. Please complete the survey to the best of your ability in order to receive compensation.

Focus Group Discussions
We will be recruiting residents to participate in focus group meetings in the Summer of 2024. More on this coming soon.
Partnerships
This research is led by clean energy transition and community-driven resilience expertises from the University of Washington and the University at Buffalo.
The innovative analytical approaches used in the research are from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The research is partnered with Seattle City Light (SCL) and other local organizations to engage residents and local communities.
